Werewolf: The Savage Age, Tribe Book Khara

Khara are the Were Sabertooth Tigers for Werewolf: The Savage Age.
This is the Tribebook cover for Khara.
We wanted a heavy metal, brutal, dark feeling image. Something that fit the world and could evoke a sense of what kind of predator they are.
I found some reference of modern tigers caked in blood, and wanted to use that for the base. Then the antlers of his prey filling the logo kinda clicked in and the rest just drew itself.

Tribebook Khara, sketch.
Basic idea, just to gauge interest. Everyone loved, so we went ahead.

Tribebook Khara, refined sketch. Getting the pieces in order, I needed to make sure the antlers worked. A good idea can kill a piece if you're not prepared to either kill it, or redo the rest of the piece to make sure it works. I think I got it.

Tribebook Khara, inks with trade dress. Making sure it fit, looked right, etc. I know most of the work would be in the finish, selling the caked on blood idea.

Tribebook Khara, proper inks. Happy with this.

Tribebook Khara, final.
I ended up having to scale back the blood idea some, otherwise he'd have just been a dark mess. The layering inside his fur works, and hopefully those eyes give you pause. "You're next" kinda vibe. Cool horror movie vibe.
